A delightful way to spend a day

I loved this course and came away with my first spoon and some very clearly taught skills to continue. Highly recommended and a delightful way to spend a day.

A bit of a mess... I've never really got on with kolrosing but I'm trying to be friends with it. We may get along better at some point in the future, I hope.

Check out his feed and website for more info on this little beaut of a tool. It's a pleasure to use. Having tools you love to use, because of how they perform and feel in use is really important. Especially if you're spending hours and hours in the workshop with them.

Almost. Dry fitting is fine. Shape the arm and comb tomorrow. Dry the wedges and glue up.

I must say it sits well this one. Proper comfy.

Let me explain, cos these pics might not make a lot of sense on their own.

The first shows the arm bow upside down. I've finished shaping the spindles and they all fit far enough through the holes in the arm. These long spindles are tapered. 5/8 tenons into the seat. Swell to 3/4 and back to 5/8 to pass through the arm. Then taper to 1/2 to fit into the comb. Tapered sticks like this are a lot of work but I think they look so much better than straight sticks.

The second image shows how I ream the arm holes from below to make fitting easier. We want a reasonably flush fit on the top of the arm. These are is 2 1/2 inches thick. So by reaming part way through the hole to make it tapered its much easier to fit the tapered sticks. It also results in a little wiggle room for any of the holes that weren't perfectly aligned.

Hope that makes sense.

Carry on making.
