Cawl spoon with folk art decorated handle
£60.00
Length: 25cm (10 inches)
Bowl width: 7.3cm
Bowl length: 5.8cm
Bowl depth: 1.5cm
Finish: red ochre and hemp seed oil
This radial sycamore cawl spoon has a deep oval bowl like proper old fashioned slupring cawl spoons. Designed for drining broth or thin soups and stews it could also be used as a ladle or serving spoon.
The handle decoration is a mixture of chip carving and other marks made with a small pick knife. Ochre pigment is applied in a water wash and penetrates deepest on all the cut surfaces making them darker and more intensly coloured. The design is spontaneous and emergent in the the carving process, there will never be another one just like this. I like to think this style of decoration sits within the folk art tradition of adding beauty to simple household utensils.

Blackthorn eating spoon #2
Length: 15cm
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 5.6cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This pretty little blackthorn spoon has a different shaped handle than I usually make, probably dictated by the knarly piece of balckthorn it was carved from. It’s got a small amount of softer wood in the bowl – that pale line through the dark heartwood – that’s why is a little bit cheaper than other spoons here. In my judgement this wont be a problem and there’s years of good sue to be had from it. Blackthorn is tough stuff.

Plum round bowl spoon #1
Length: 17cm (6 3/4 inches)
Bowl width: 5cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This spoon has a pronounced crank and a shallow round bowl with a flat rim. It’s a general purpose eating spoon and not a deep bowl soup spoon like traditional round spoons, although you could eat soup with it of course. Plum is very hard and durable.

Blackthorn teaspoon #1
Length: 14cm (5 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 3.5cm
Bowl length: 4.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This elegant blackthorn teaspoon has a longish handle with an interesting pattern of facets. The pale wood at the bowl edge will darken and pick up a lovely patina when it’s stirred a few hundred cuts of tea.

Wild plum eating spoon #9
Length: 17.5cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This light coloured bullace or wild plum spoon has darker heartwood in the depths of the bowl. The wood is very hard and smooth, it’s got quite a deep bowl ideal for soup. It’s a bit cheaper as it’s an old spoon that turned up recently when I tidied my workshop.

Wild plum eating spoon #7
Length: 17cm (6 3/4 inches)
Bowl width: 4.6cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This dark coloured bullace or wild plum spoon has distinctive markings in the bowl. The wood is very hard and silky smooth, it’s going to be a joy to eat with.

Cherry wood eating spoon #4
Length: 17.5cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.6cm
Bowl length: 6.2cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This eating spoon from a tight grained piece of cherry has a small knot in the back of the neck. It’s more of a beauty mark than a flaw and and wont effect it being used although it little extra care when cleaning wouldn’t go amiss.

Blackthorn eating spoon #6
Length: 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 4.3cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This elegant blackthorn spoon has plenty of gorgeous heartwood in the depths of the bowl. Just a little smaller with a slightly narrower bowl than most of my other eating spoons.

Lavaspoon – round bowl #3
Length: 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 5.5cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
A round bowl sycamore eating spoon or soup spoon with my special red and black milk paint finish, folks at Spoonfest called them lavaspoons and the name has stuck. This is a rare round one – I’ve only made about 4 or 5 of these all told. This one has an extra special handle as it has 7 facets on the top surface, I usually only carve 5.
This has quite a deep bowl, better for eating soup and more liquid foods but would work OK for porridge.
