Lavaspoon – round bowl #3
Length: 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 5.5cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
A round bowl sycamore eating spoon or soup spoon with my special red and black milk paint finish, folks at Spoonfest called them lavaspoons and the name has stuck. This is a rare round one – I’ve only made about 4 or 5 of these all told. This one has an extra special handle as it has 7 facets on the top surface, I usually only carve 5.
This has quite a deep bowl, better for eating soup and more liquid foods but would work OK for porridge.

Blackthorn teaspoon #1
Length: 14cm (5 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 3.5cm
Bowl length: 4.5cm

This elegant blackthorn teaspoon has a longish handle with an interesting pattern of facets. The pale wood at the bowl edge will darken and pick up a lovely patina when it’s stirred a few hundred cuts of tea.

Blackthorn eating spoon #15
Length: 16cm (6 1/4 inches)
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 6cm

This radial blackthorn spoon has an symmertic bowl making suitable for left or right handers. There’s a striking black line running down it between the darked heartwood and the pale sapwood. It’s got a facetted oval profile handle and some lovely dark red tones in th heartwood. Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous.

Blackthorn eating spoon #16
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.3cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This blackthorn spoon has an asymmertic bowl making suitable for right handers only. I’ts a tough little spoon being made entirely from heartwood and there’s some lovely dark red tones in handle as well as the bowl. Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous. It’s a bit cheaper than most of my other blackthorn spoons as it was squeezed out of a shallower piece of wood and has a little less crank than usual.

Wild plum eating spoon #2

The bowl and neck of this spoon, from the heart wood of wild plum or bullace, is such a gorgeous deep red brown colour. This wood is very hard and the bowl is silky smooth so it should eat like a dream.

Plum round bowl spoon #1
Length: 17cm (6 3/4 inches)
Bowl width: 5cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This spoon has a pronounced crank and a shallow round bowl with a flat rim. It’s a general purpose eating spoon and not a deep bowl soup spoon like traditional round spoons, although you could eat soup with it of course. Plum is very hard and durable.

Blackthorn eating spoon #17
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oil
This blackthorn spoon has a symmertic bowl making suitable for left or right handers. It’s an exceptionally beautiful piece of blackthorn heartwood with lots of lovely dark red tones in handle as well as the bowl. Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous. Blackthorn is prunus family like plum and damson and shares the same exceptional colours. It usually grows as a prickly shrub on scrub land and in hedges and it’s rare to get large enough pieces to carve like this entirely from the heartwood. This was from Llangrannog in west Wales where an overgrown lane side was cleared back to allow traffic to pass more easily.
