    Elm eating spoon #2

    Elm eating spoon #2

    Length: 16cm  (6 1/4 inches)
    Bowl width: 4.2cm
    Bowl length: 5.5cm
    Finish: hemp seed oil

There’s plenty of interest in the grain of this elm eating spoon which is a just little smaller than many spoons I carve, likely due to the size of the branch it ws carved from. I think smaller bowled spoons are sometimes better for eating main meals like rice based dishes. The elm dries very hard and should last many years of regular use.

    Sycamore lavaspoon #20

    Length: 17cm (6 1/2 inches)
    Bowl width: 4.5cm
    Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: milk paint and hemp seed oil

This is a one off lavaspoon with an extra bit of crank from a piece of pale wood that might be sycamore. It’s been hanging around for a little while in my basket of nearly finished spoons and I’ve forgotten what I carved it fromo I finished and painted it and it turned out nice with an extra slim neck and smooth thin bowl. It’s listed separately here as it’s not my standard lavaspoon eater shape. It’s a one off.

This quirky asymmetric eating spoon from slightly spalted cherry wood is intended for right handed use only. The hole on the handle is where the was a knot in the wood. It was the last piece of this spalted cherry and too nice to discard so the knot hole became a feature. The wood at the edge may look thin but it follows the grain where it went around the knot and so it’s strong.

    Cotinus eating spoon #17

Cotinus is also known as Smoke Bush or Venetian Sumac.

    Length: 17cm  (6 3/4 inches)

A pretty eating spoon with a relatively small bowl and subtle dolphin profile. The handle has a slight hollow and a ripple to provide comfort and fun for your thumb.

Ebonising is done by painting with a solution of iron in vinegar, this reacts with the tannins in the wood to turn it black.

    Elm crook eating spoon #6

    Elm crook eating spoon #6

    Length: 18cm  (7 inches)
    Bowl width: 4.2cm
    Bowl length: 6cm
    Finish: hemp seed oil

This elm spoon was made from a crook, a bent section of the branch, so the grain runs through the bown. Notice how there long oval rings in the bowl rather than the circles you see on some straight grained spoons. This makes the spoon stronger and the thin, slightly narrower bowl, makes it great eating spoon for main meals like rice based dishes. The elm dries very hard and should last many years of regular use.
