Cawl spoon with folk art decorated handle
Length: 25cm (10 inches)
Bowl width: 7.3cm
Bowl length: 5.8cm
Bowl depth: 1.5cm
Finish: red ochre and hemp seed oilThis radial sycamore cawl spoon has a deep oval bowl like proper old fashioned slupring cawl spoons. Designed for drining broth or thin soups and stews it could also be used as a ladle or serving spoon.
The handle decoration is a mixture of chip carving and other marks made with a small pick knife. Ochre pigment is applied in a water wash and penetrates deepest on all the cut surfaces making them darker and more intensly coloured. The design is spontaneous and emergent in the the carving process, there will never be another one just like this. I like to think this style of decoration sits within the folk art tradition of adding beauty to simple household utensils.

Blackthorn eating spoon #16
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.3cm
Bowl length: 5.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis blackthorn spoon has an asymmertic bowl making suitable for right handers only. I’ts a tough little spoon being made entirely from heartwood and there’s some lovely dark red tones in handle as well as the bowl. Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous. It’s a bit cheaper than most of my other blackthorn spoons as it was squeezed out of a shallower piece of wood and has a little less crank than usual.

Blackthorn eating spoon #17
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis blackthorn spoon has a symmertic bowl making suitable for left or right handers. It’s an exceptionally beautiful piece of blackthorn heartwood with lots of lovely dark red tones in handle as well as the bowl. Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous. Blackthorn is prunus family like plum and damson and shares the same exceptional colours. It usually grows as a prickly shrub on scrub land and in hedges and it’s rare to get large enough pieces to carve like this entirely from the heartwood. This was from Llangrannog in west Wales where an overgrown lane side was cleared back to allow traffic to pass more easily.

Blackthorn eating spoon #21
Length: 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 4.5cm
Bowl length: 5.8cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis blackthorn spoon has an asymmertic bowl making suitable for right handers only. It’s cleft radially so there’s a mixture of the pale sapwood and the dark heartwood with red and dark brown tones. There’s a striking black line between the two colours of wood and this is characteristic of blackthorn (and other trees in the plum family). Note that over time the red will most likely fade to a dark brown but it’ll still be gorgeous.

Cherry wood eating spoon #1
Length: 17cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 5cm
Bowl length: 7cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis eating spoon is unusual for me having a slightly asymetrical bowl making it a right handed spoon. Cherry like this with some dark growth rings doesn’t come along very often.

Cherry wood eating spoon #2
Length: 17cm (6 3/4 inches)
Bowl width: 5cm
Bowl length: 6.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis chunky eating spoon is typical of my recent carving. The bowl is deep enough at the back to hold plenty of liquid but shallow at the front to eat off comfortably. The handle is thicker than you might be used to but oval in profile with a facetted top surface and rounded below to make it extra comfy to hold. Cherry like this with some dark growth rings doesn’t come along very often.

Cherry wood eating spoon #3
Length: 17cm (6 3/4 inches)
Bowl width: 4.6cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis eating spoon from a pretty pretty piece of cherry has a couple of small knots in the bowl and neck but these are solid and wont effect it being used, they’re kind of like beauty spots.

Cherry wood eating spoon #6
Length: 16.5cm (6 1/2 inches)
Bowl width: 4.8cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis eating spoon from a tight grained piece of cherry with a knotty feature in the bowl. It also has a very pretty handle where it cuts down through the growth rings from sap wood to heart wood. A very unusual piece of wood. The knot in the bowl might be a structural problem in time, this may be a decorative spoon for occasional use rather than a daily workhorse.

Cherry wood lavaspoon #1
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.8cm
Bowl length: 6.5cm
Finish: hemp seed oilThis is a one off spoon at present, a cherry wood eating spoon with a lavaspoon style milk paint handle. I usually use sycamore for this as the contrast between the painted handle and pale bowl is more striking. However I rather like how this turned out, the red is a bit moe subtle as the wood is darker and it’s been well received, so who knows it may be the first of the line cherry lava’s. But for now it’s one and only.

Cotinus eating spoon #18
Cotinus is also known as Smoke Bush or Venetian Sumac.
Length: 18cm (7 inches)
Bowl width: 4.8cm
Bowl length: 6cm
Finish: hemp seed oilA right handed eating spoon with an ebonised handle. The handle has a slight hollow and a ripple to provide comfort and fun for your thumb.
Ebonising is done by painting with a solution of iron in vinegar, this reacts with the tannins in the wood to turn it black.
I had limited supply of Cotinus, they’re all either sold or for sale on this site – when they’re gone they’re gone.
